One of Europe’s most diverse production facilities for extended wear life components
Working in partnership with OEM designers, the Chapmans team utilise their considerable agricultural experience and manufacturing know-how to provide innovative and bespoke solutions which translate into tangible benefits for the customer. Coupling this experience with a wealth of CAD modelling talent and a 3D printer, Chapmans partner with their customers to take concepts from prototype to volume production.
The favourite part of my job is seeing a customer’s ideas come to life as we discuss methods to manufacture their part in a way that reduces complexity and cost while extending wear life. If I can give them a 3D printed sample to trial for fitment – even better!
A Worked Example
Cast part redesign within a two month timeframe
Chapmans have been working with a long-standing customer to redesign a cast part which had been sourced from China. The customer design team came to Chapmans with a brief to create a part of equal durability, strength, while reducing its weight all within in a two-month timeframe. With the two businesses working in partnership, a new hot formed part was designed that was both lighter, cheaper and crucially had the same wear properties as the previous part.
The fitment of the part was trialled with a 3D printed sample, and prototypes were produced in time for a major trade fair. As an added bonus, the new part could be retrofitted to machines in the field, helping boost the spares business for this OEM.
With a cost control ethos, the Chapmans design team is constantly looking for ways in which to simplify the design and manufacture of parts. This can be through using different materials, different manufacturing techniques, or even by reducing the number of component parts required to build an assembly.
In recent years we have had more and more customers asking us to replace complex fabricated parts with a Boron formed parts which they can order in, allowing their production to focus on the money-making process of assembling machines rather than manufacturing components.
