Advent is near

27 November 2025

It’s dark, it’s cold, harvesting is complete, fields have been sown.  Late November is a time we might dismiss within the UK agricultural calendar.

We live in a world where we can buy pineapples, mangos and coconuts at any time of year; grown in far-flung places.  But there was a time, many moons ago, where we had to rely more heavily on native fruit and vegetables, as importing exotic foods was tricky.

Whilst most of us enjoy having the option to buy whatever fruit and veg we like, some traditions have kept their place on the British dinner table, specifically thinking of hearty winter meals and Christmas fayre.  Who can resist a nicely roasted parsnip, a glazed carrot or a dollop of cauliflower cheese?  Many of us have fond memories of Brussels sprouts boiled for two hours, just to make sure they were soft!

Of course the reason these vegetables feature so much in winter dishes is that they are hardy root crops that are harvested late in the year.

Here at Chapmans, we supply all kinds of wear-resistant parts for use in harvesting, seeding, plough, cultivation and many other sectors.  We also enjoy hearty meals and the countdown to Christmas!

Advent Sunday is just days away, then the countdown to Christmas can begin in earnest!
