Digging the Dirt: Autumn Ploughing

22 September 2025

Here at Chapmans, we manufacture wear parts for a range of different applications, our largest market being ploughing.

Now we have reached September, harvesting is almost done, and many farmers are preparing their land for the next growing cycle.

A number of processes can be used to prepare ground for sowing, but ploughing in its crudest form dates back millennia, and has always had the same fundamental purposes: to turn over and loosen the top layer of soil – up to around 12” down – to bury weeds and crop residue, and to bring nutrients to the surface, which can all help crops to grow, ultimately optimising yields – as long as the British weather is kind!

Modern ploughing is big business.  A whopping 70% of the UK’s land area is devoted to agriculture, with over 6,000,000 hectares of land being used to grow crops: that requires a massive amount of land management.  Chapmans are here to help, being a key supplier of all plough wear parts, from little points to 30kg mouldboards, and everything in between.
