Fire and Fury: Heat Treatment at Chapmans
Fire and Fury are two of BBC’s Gladiators, currently filming series 3 at Sheffield Arena, just 3 miles from Chapmans.
Here at Chapmans, we generate our own Fire and Fury.
We use our 12 furnaces to heat-treat almost all products we manufacture, typically heating boron steel to 1000°C, before plunging the component into cold water (quenching) in order to make it as hard as possible by changing the material’s microstructure.
We achieve a finished hardness in excess of 50 HRC – therefore rendering it very wear-resistant and long-lasting, ready for its working life as an earth-engaging part.
Additional processes, such as adding carbide tiles or sintered coatings, can extend our parts’ working life still further.
Any manufacturing process can be an enigma to those not directly involved in it. At Chapmans, heat treatment is our core process: it really allows our products to stand out in the field (literally), much like a Gladiator on the TV show.
